About WHAINGAROA HARBOUR CARE
Whaingaroa Harbour Care has been at the forefront of native planting for riparian management for nearly three decades. We’ve worked alongside landowners to plant more than 2 million eco-sourced native trees, secured behind more than 500km of fences, creating corridors of biodiversity and preventing silt and nutrient runoff from entering waterways.
After protecting rivers, streams, wetlands and harbour edges in the Whaingaroa catchment, we’re now turning our attention to planting native trees for carbon capture by growing forever forests.
We’ve developed and trialled a new planting style that meets the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme criteria of stems per hectare and canopy cover, using only native plants. This method is cost effective and uses fast growing, hardy native trees.
